Optical Imaging Platform

Overview of Services

This research platform is administered by the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and provides equipment and expertise to assist researchers in applying advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques and sample preparation to their research.

1. Confocal and live cell imaging: Several advanced microscopes are available for imaging live or fixed samples, 2D or 3D, time-lapsed, and in multicolor. Wide-field and confocal systems provide the ability to image a large range of specimens, from cultured cells and tissue slices, to live organs, embryos, and animals.

2. Prepare high-quality tissue sections with ease using the appropriate sectioning technique for your application. Our facility supports a wide range of sample preparation needs - from fresh or fixed specimens, room temperature or low-temperature sectioning, and micron- to nanometre-thick sections, ensuring optimal sample quality for downstream imaging and analysis.

3. Technical training: The research platform provides training in usage of the microscopes. Training sessions are arranged in consultation with the platform staff. Once trained, users have unrestricted access to the facility to carry out their own image acquisition and analysis in the core.

5. Consultation: Consultation on experimental design and approach is provided by the platform staff. We provide free consultation for your project needs : Please book a consulation via ilab [Request Services > Consultation]

Services include:

• Specialized Microscopy Training: Structured training modules designed to equip users with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to confidently operate advanced microscopy systems.
• Self-Use Imaging: Book our microscopy systems on an hourly basis after completing the required training and competency assessment. Suitable for independent users.
• Full Support Imaging: Receive one-to-one guidance from our staff throughout your imaging session. Our staff will provide technical support on microscopy applications while you operate the microscope using your own samples.
• Full Imaging Service: Leave the imaging to us. Our staff will manage the entire workflow; from consultation and image acquisition to basic image processing and simple image analysis.
